About Us

Founded in 2022, the Data Warriors investigate, inform and inspire action on local social justice issues through math and mapping. We build community among Syracuse youth, teachers, faculty and student researchers.

The Data Warriors program is an after-school collaboration between Syracuse University faculty and students, and Nottingham High School mathematics teachers and students. The Data Warriors program equips Syracuse youth with tools to investigate real issues in their neighborhoods—like environmental injustice and systemic racism—using the power of math, maps, and storytelling. Data Warriors students engage in Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) alongside university faculty and high school teachers to develop research projects, build data literacy skills, and move towards addressing community concerns.

Through hands-on research, youth-led teams, and community collaboration, our students grow as leaders while creating real-world impact. We believe that when young people have the skills and space to lead, they can transform systems—and reimagine a more just future.

In 2025, Data Warriors expanded to a second site at Henninger High School.
