The Data Warriors have long welcomed community members to engage in conversations around social justice, data literacy, art, and civic engagement. Over the past year, they’ve built connections with professionals across Syracuse to deepen dialogue and action around local inequities.
Syracuse Data Day
On October 10th, 2024, Guest Speaker Jason Scharf, City of
Syracuse, Visited Data Warriors in NHW Library. Scharf navigated the Data Warriors through OpenDataSyracuse, a website designed to make public data accessible, transparent, and easy to explore.
Data Warriors also engaged with the broader community and participated in the Open Data Day on November 2nd, 2024.

Black History Celebration
In February 2025, Data Warriors celebrated Black History Month with a public event. Students showcased their research projects in the Nottingham Library through an interactive gallery walk.

Field Trip: ArcGIS Workshop and SU Map Room
PhD Student Lauren Ashby led the Data Warriors and Applications of Statistics students in a hands-on workshop to learn mapping skills using ArcGIS online software on March 24, 2025.

Try-Math-alon and People’s Choice Poster Contest
We hosted the Inaugural “Try-Math”alon on April 23, 2025 at Nottingham High School. This event was co-sponsored by the Office of Community-Engagement and support staff, Mr. Starling.
Public Showcase: Engaged Humanities Network
The Data Warriors presented their research at the Engaged Humanities Network Showcase. This May 3, 2025, event allowed students to learn about other engaged projects and present their project to a diverse, interdisciplinary audience.






Gerrit Smith Estate and Abolition Hall of Fame
Mr. Ken Keech designed an immersion field trip experience for Data Warrior and Applications of Statistics students on May 12, 2025. Chaperoned by Nottingham faculty Mr. Keech, Ms. Pearson, and the College and Career Counseling staff, as well as SU Data Warriors teacher leaders Lauren Ashby and Nicole Fonger, we experienced the rich history of Petersboro, NY, and local landmarks
significant American history.
